Popups and Browser Hijacks
If you have constant popups when you are not even using a web browser, or your homepage has changed to something you did not want it to be, you likely have been infected with spyware or adware.
Spyware
Spyware is programming that is put in someone's computer to secretly gather information about the user and relay it to advertisers or other interested parties.
Adware
Adware is a separate program that is installed at the same time as a shareware or similar program, adware will usually continue to generate advertising even when the user is not running the origianlly desired program. This can also change your home page to something like a pay-per click search engine or porographic site where the owner of the site generates money each time their page is viewed.
Windows Messaging Spam
If the popups you are getting are error message windows instead of web browser windows this is caused by a vulnerability in windows. To stop this activity, take the following steps.
  • Click on start
  • Then Run
  • Type in "services.msc" without the quotes and hit enter.
  • Scroll down the list until you get to "Messenger" and double click on it. The description should read "Transmits net send and Alerter services messages between clients and servers."
  • Click the button marked "Stop"
  • Using the drop-down list next to "Startup type:" change this to "Disabled"
  • You are now safe to close all the windows opened during this process.
