Basic Security steps
Please note, one of each step must be followed, one program that does everything is usually not as good as specialized programs tailored to one task.

1) Keep Your Windows Installation updated by downloading all critical updates from WindowsUpdate. Windows Me and XP can be set up to automatically download the updates for you, other versions of windows have "Windows updates" that will allow you to be notified when a new patch is released.

2) Disable File & Print sharing.

3) Download an Anti Virus Program and scan and update regularly.

4) Download a Trojan Cleaner Program and scan and update regularly.

5) Download a sotware or purchase a hardware Firewall or both.

6) Download an Adware/Spyware remover and scan and update regularly.

7) If you have a wireless network Secure it from unwanted access.
